We are reaching the time of year when adult bagworms start breeding and multiplying. As the young bagworms finish building their bags they’ll hang them from the tree and the males will turn into a moth while the females will never leave the bag again. (more…)

Sometimes it’s hard to tell exactly what is happening in your lawn at this time. There are a lot of different elements that could have contributed to making your lawn look less than presentable. The most common problems that we see are grub, heat, or skunk damage in the lawns around this time. In the Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus regions, The Organic Turf Company recommends that watering be done for about 15-20 minutes per area, in the cool of the morning, three days a week. In this way, your grass is provided the moisture it needs, without increased risk of lawn disease, and also avoids overwatering. This also provides your lawn with the proper amount of water, 1 to 1 ½ inches per week. Make sure to check for puddles or runoff, as these can be signs of overwatering. (more…)
Scale is one of the most interesting pest insects we see during our tree and shrub treatments and can oftentimes be mistaken for something other than an insect that is feeding off your tree. The reason for this is because as adults they actually lose their legs and form a protective shell around themselves that can oftentimes camouflage them and keep you from really being able to tell they are there. Summer patch, Magnaporthe poae, and necrotic ring spot, Leptosphaeria korrae, are two separate diseases which attack turfgrass roots and previously were referred to as fusarium blight. Research continues to look for information on these diseases. Brown patch, Rhizoctonia solani, may also attack lawns. These “patch diseases” are similar in appearance and management.
Even though there is a lot of sun, mosquitoes are still going to be running rampant around your property. They are not a fan of direct sunlight and dry areas, but there are many various hiding places for them to go.
Be on the look out for those shady areas and near any standing water, like ponds. You may still find that terribly little creature there, waiting to pounce.
While it has been quite dry recently, please do not assume browning areas of your lawn are drought stress. We are going into prime damage time for Surface Insects. There is no rhyme or reason why they choose certain lawns but when they do show up, they will eat it up in a hurry.
One of the more common insect pests that we notice while doing our tree and shrub application are bagworms.
This time of year is when they are emerging as larva and feeding on the leaves of the tree which can often times lead to defoliation. Defoliation can lead to severe damage or death of the tree.
Their favorites are arborvitae and red cedar but many other conifers and deciduous trees are also fed upon.
This time of year, wild violets are one of the more active perennial weeds in the lawn. They grow fast, spread faster, and their wide leaves and purple, blue or white blooms can negatively impact lawn appearance. Though they tolerate drought well, they flourish in moist, shady areas. Typically, they flower in mid May.
